Google Maps Turn left from the driveway and travel about a mile to the Mora Ranger Station on the left. There is a parking lot and a bulletin board nearby. The James Pond Trailhead is located to the right of the Mora Ranger Station and goes north across Mora Road. This charming little marshland pond offers a delightful escape for the whole family, just a short walk from your cozy rental cabin on Mora Road or take the Slough Trail to Mora Ranger Station to begin your hike. It's the perfect way to spend a peaceful afternoon immersed in nature, without venturing far.

Hiking the Trail

As you follow the path, towering trees cast a dappled shade, creating a cool and refreshing atmosphere. Keep your eyes peeled for vibrant wildflowers and mushrooms pushing through the undergrowth, adding a splash of color to the scene. Listen closely, and you might hear the calls of bald eagles fishing at the pond or the rustle of small creatures hidden amongst the ferns.

The highlight of the trail is the marshland itself. At the far northeast end of the loop, a small spur trail leads you to a spot where you can get a closer look at this unique ecosystem. A log juts out into the pond, offering a perfect vantage point for observing the diverse life that thrives here. Imagine watching dragonflies flitting across the water's surface, spotting turtles basking on logs, or hearing the croaking of frogs in the distance.
